Gardening Series: Urban Arboriculture
Urban Arboriculture is science based urban tree care, stressing the term "care", as in "tree health care". The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has developed standards for providing the best management practices for urban trees, based on years of research performed by certified arborists; although certifications in arboriculture are relatively new to the industry. Being a certified arborist proves that an individual is dedicated to the profession and is devoted to promoting and providing the best management practices for sustaining urban forests, while protecting persons and property in the vicinity of the tree. The intention of Arbor Management's program/presentation at The Gardens at SIUE is to share our knowledge and experience acquired from our rigorous training and education backgrounds. Through the presentation students will leave with an understanding of proper tree planting techniques, fertilization methods, and pruning, thinning, redirecting and reduction techniques. This will allow the students to promote healthy urban trees by practicing and spreading the newly gained knowledge, and vigilantly requiring any local tree service to perform the standards of the ISA. Students should be prepared to take notes, pictures, ask any questions, and have fun. Wear comfortable hiking apparel, and be prepared for any weather conditions, as this will be an outdoor event. We are excited to have you attend this presentation about our majestic urban giants!
